He was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell New Mexico he fell in affection with Colorado and then relocated to Aspen. Denver's anthems for his adopted state have drawn many to Colorado. G. Brown of Colorado Music Hall of Fame, the hall's curator of fame said: "I don't believe there any other performer who embodies Colorado like John Denver." Danoff wrote the tune in the spirit of Johnny Cash, but Denver could hear an early version and knew it was going to be an instant hit in the top 10. The song was performed in Washington D.C. to a massive crowd, Denver recorded it just days afterward.
